Buy Reclaimed Flooring – Buy a Piece of History

As many of you will know, Reclaimed Floorboards is a blog run by the staff of Mckay Flooring, the UK’s largest independent wood flooring company.

Mckay Flooring’s commercial contracting division has worked in some of the most impressive buildings that Scottish heritage has to offer including: Edinburgh Castle, Culzean Castle, the University of Glasgow (est 1451), His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Hampden, Ibrox, Park Head and many more including large corporations who have taken over victorian buildings – for a full list click here.

In many of these prestigious buildings we have repaired the gorgeous historic floors, like the 18th century teak we restored in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery. But in many more we have come away with bundles of reclaimed floorboards, which will have been walked on by some of Scotland’s most important people, and seen some of Scotland’s most important events – a true piece of history.

So, not only is reclaimed flooring an excellent choice for those wanting to reduce their carbon footprint and excellent value for money, it is also bringing a piece of history into your home, as well as getting a beautiful floor covering far better than carpets (read this post to find out why) at a fraction of the price it would normally cost.

Take our reclaimed maple flooring, now it is available in 57mm wide and 83mm wide planks, both of which are priced at £15.33 per square meter. Maple flooring tends to have come from prestigious buildings because maple is among the most expensive wood flooring species, up to £103 per square meter new.

The history aspect sounds worrying when it comes to wood flooring, thinking about the state it must be in after all those years, and, you’re right. I have just come out of the warehouse, and it never ceases to amaze me why people would not look after such beautiful floors.

That said: the fitters only keep wood flooring that still has a lifetime of use with proper care. In fact, it is the people’s failure to look after it properly that leads to it being such a good purchase; a floors life is only determined by the depth of the finish, and so, the fewer times it is re-sanded, the longer it will last.

In flooring, beauty is more than skin deep; once our fitters have laid the reclaimed floor, re-sanded it and refinished it to the customer’s preference it is as beautiful as the first day it was laid – reclaimed flooring becomes restored flooring. Buy your reclaimed floor today>>>.
