I just read a post on an American wood flooring company’s blog that explained why reclaimed flooring isn’t the cheapest, because of all the work that goes into reclaiming the wood and making it saleable.
Now, I don’t know whether or not they are referring to woods reclaimed from other uses, but our wood flooring is certainly the cheapest of the flooring that we sell.
When our fitters go to lay a new hardwood floor, in many cases they are tasked to lift the old floor, which may have many years of life left in it if treated properly. The best of the floors that we lift are brought back to the warehouse in bundles, in the state which they have been lifted. This is often not very pretty, but it is not meant to be pretty at this stage.
The reclaimed floors we most often have on sale are:
- Reclaimed Maple (57mm and 83mm wide planks, 83mm currently out of stock)
- Reclaimed Beech Junker’s sports floors (with sports lines and without)
- And Reclaimed Opepe
As you can imagine, when they are brought back to the warehouse they look used and, to be quite honest abused, but they are an affordable option for many who would otherwise be unable to consider the benefits of real wood flooring.
The reclaimed beech Junkers with sports lines is the cheapest at just £12.00 per square meter. Let’s be honest, sports lines aren’t the kinds of things we want running across our living room.
But this is not a problem, when people buy a reclaimed floor from us and hire us to lay it, the floor is properly laid, before then being re-sanded, and refinished to look like new. This process takes away all traces of the sports lines, leaving the buyer with a beautiful real beech wood floor at a fraction of the price it would have cost new, and a floor for life if properly looked after.
Reclaimed Junkers beech before and after finishing
Reclaimed Opepe is the next most expensive at £14.00 per square meter. This is a much darker and tougher wood, but again once laid and properly finished it comes up good as new, and will last a lifetime if properly cared for.
Both the reclaimed maple and the reclaimed Junkers beech without sports line cost the same, £15.33 per square meter. Maple wood is among the most expensive at up to £103 per square meter, so this is a particularly special bargain. The only difference the lack of sports lines makes, is that the wood without the sports lines will have a longer life post-finishing, because it needs less sanding.

Interesting post on reclaimed flooring there in the UK. I think that one of the economies you have is that you are taking the old floor up and re-using it. A lot of what our (US) reclaimed sources are here are from salvaged buildings. There is a lot of labor in the re-handling, de-nailing and re-drying. We sell to other flooring companies I am including a couple links for you here. One is a video for Rustic oak flooring and the other is to my blog. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvW0IcANaRA and my blog is "theboardreport.blogspot.com"
I look forward to hearing from you!
