Popular Reclaimed Flooring Species Part I: Maple and Beech

Our love of wood flooring, and especially reclaimed flooring is known throughout the land, of course we have our favourites and we know exactly what woods will work in a particular room, and fit which budget etc.

For other people the choice of wood flooring can be overwhelming, so we thought it would be a good idea to cover the most popular species of wood flooring, and explain why they are popular.

Reclaimed Maple Flooring:

Maple is a fine grained wood with a smooth texture. Most of the reclaimed Maple you will see will have been lifted from dance and gym halls, as a result it will tend to have a thick layer of lacquer and often a dark appearance. Sand back those layers however, and you are looking at a very light wood.

Without stain Maple has an incredible shine when finished, and is excellent for making a room look bigger and feel warmer by reflecting the natural light.

In reclaimed flooring, Maple is popular for a number of reasons, but the main reasons are

History
Our Maple is mostly lifted from old schools and gym halls, many of which have rich history in the city
Availability
We tend to lift large amounts of Maple at a time, and so it is very rarely out of stock in plank form, however, we currently have some reclaimed Maple blocks lifted from the Kilmarnock Academy in stock
Value for money
The aforementioned thick layers of lacquer usually covering reclaimed Maple keeps the wood like new. This means that buyers of reclaimed Maple flooring get a nearly-new maple floor for a fraction of the cost of a new maple floor

Reclaimed Beech Flooring:

Beech is a gorgeous wood in its natural form, with so many variants in tone, and a gorgeous sound under foot. Anyone who has ever been to a modern sports hall will most probably have seen beech wood flooring, because most sports floors in the UK are created using Junkers Beech (and mostly laid and marked with sports lines by us).

Here are some of the main reasons for the popularity of Reclaimed Beech:

Cheap and Cheerful
Reclaimed Beech tends to be lifted with sports lines intact, and is sold cheaper as a result. Reclaimed Beech with sports lines is one of the cheapest reclaimed flooring products on the market
Availability
Again, we lift reclaimed Beech in bulk, and, because we are one of the UK's biggest sports flooring contractors we come across a great volume of reclaimed Beech. People tend to buy what they see and they nearly always see reclaimed Beech
Unique Designs
The sports lines are not considered a negative by everyone; designers, architects and the like have seen the potential to use the lines to create unique patterns and designs on the floor (see below)
